Zoe Zhou. Licensed life and health insurance agent in Ontario, regulated by FSRA, based in Richmond Hill. I also prepare personal and small business tax returns.

I came here as an immigrant myself. We landed nine years ago — my husband on a study permit, me on a spousal work permit. In my second year I became self-employed, registered a sole proprietorship, and have filed properly every year since.

A mistake I made myself

For our first few years my husband bought UHIP through his university, and spousal UHIP for me. We paid it for years.

It was only when he was close to finishing his PhD that I looked properly at the OHIP eligibility rules — and found I had been eligible for a long time. I had been working full-time — self-employed — the whole time.

We spent several thousand dollars on coverage we did not need. Not because the rules were secret, but because nobody told us and I never checked.

That is what this site is for. Most of the money people lose here is lost to rules nobody explained.

What I am not

I am not a financial advisor or a financial planner. Both titles are protected in Ontario and require a credential I do not hold.

I am not an accountant either. I prepare returns; complex tax planning belongs with a CPA.

How I get paid

Insurers pay me a commission. Buying through me does not raise your premium. Tax work is priced per item and every price is published.

You also receive a separate written disclosure before any policy is placed.
