Fake CRA calls can show the real CRA number
Yan Zhou (周艳) · Licensed Life & Health Insurance Agent, Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA)
The short version
- Caller ID can be faked. A call showing a real CRA number proves nothing.
- CRA does not collect tax in gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.
- CRA does not threaten immediate arrest or deportation over the phone.
- Hang up and call the official number yourself. That single step defeats nearly every version of this.
If something here applies to you, just ask me. Plain answers, no sales pitch.

A real call, for comparison
I have taken genuine CRA calls — usually because they could not reach a client and rang me instead.
The agent opened with their name and agent ID, then explained which client and which matter.
At no point was I asked to provide identifying numbers, and at no point was money mentioned.
A fake one
Another time the display showed 800-959-8281, which is a genuine CRA line.
The caller gave an agent ID and sounded entirely routine.
Then came the tell: verify your identity, and there is a balance that must be dealt with today.
Numbers can be spoofed. That is the single most useful thing to know here.
How to tell them apart
| A scammer will | CRA will not |
|---|---|
| Ask for gift cards, crypto or a wire transfer | Only use official payment channels |
| Threaten immediate arrest or deportation | Not threaten you on the phone |
| Press you to pay now and stay on the line | Let you hang up and call back |
| Send a link asking for banking details | Only notify you that mail is waiting |
| Text about a refund you must claim | Deposit refunds to the account on file |
If you get one
- Confirm nothing. Not your SIN, not your date of birth, not your address.
- Hang up. You do not owe them politeness.
- Find CRA’s number yourself, or sign in to your CRA account and look.
- If you already paid or shared details, contact your bank and report it.
I work in tax every day and I still received one. It has nothing to do with how much you know.
