How much super visa insurance do you actually need?

The short answer

$100,000. Not $1 million.

That is the minimum emergency medical coverage IRCC requires. Pages in both English and Chinese get this wrong, and at least one page near the top of the search results states the minimum as $1 million — off by a factor of ten.

What else the policy has to do

RequirementWhat IRCC says
Minimum coverage$100,000 in emergency medical
TermValid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
Must coverHealth care, hospitalization and repatriation
Each entryValid for every entry to Canada
At the borderAvailable for review by a border services officer on request
Named insurerThe policy must show the company that issued it

Repatriation is the one people miss. Cheaper travel policies sometimes leave it out, and without it the policy does not meet the requirement.

Is $100,000 enough?

It is the legal minimum, not a recommendation.

It is worth knowing what a hospital stay actually costs in Ontario before deciding whether to buy more. Higher limits are available and cost more.

One thing to check on the paperwork

The policy must name the insurer — the company underwriting the risk. A broker’s name on the document is not the same thing, and this trips up applications.

Send me the policy and I will check it line by line against the IRCC requirements before you file.
